How do you make the Perfect Cobb Salad?

This is one of the best Cobb salads you can make at home. The technique is straightforward and requires only a cutting board and a sharp knife. The key is fresh ingredients and arranging the toppings so every bite has a bit of everything.

  • Lettuce – I like a mix of romaine and red leaf for texture and color. Use romaine for crunch and tender red leaf for presentation.
  • Tomatoes – Cherry tomatoes quartered work well; they’re juicy and easy to eat.
  • Avocado – Ripe avocado adds creaminess; chop it into bite-sized pieces.
  • Shredded chicken – Leftover roasted or shredded slow‑cooker chicken is perfect; rotisserie chicken is a great shortcut.
  • Hard‑boiled egg – Slice or quarter eggs for richness and color.
  • Green onions – Thinly sliced scallions add a mild onion flavor.
  • Bacon – Crispy bacon or bacon pieces provide saltiness and crunch.
  • Bleu cheese – Crumbled bleu cheese adds a tangy, savory finish.

What dressing pairs best with a Cobb salad?

Classic Cobb salad is often served with a creamy dressing. I prefer a buttermilk bleu cheese dressing for its tang and richness, but ranch or a simple vinaigrette also work well depending on your taste. Add extra crumbled bleu cheese on top for more flavor, then toss the salad well before serving so the dressing coats everything evenly.

This salad is easy to crave and worth making throughout the warm months — it’s bright, hearty and satisfying.

  • 1 small head red leaf lettuce
  • 2 cups romaine
  • 1 hard boiled egg
  • 1 cup sliced cherry tomatoes
  • 1 cup shredded chicken breast
  • 1/2 cup sliced green onions
  • 1/2 cup cooked bacon ends and pieces
  • 1/2 avocado, chopped
  • 2 ounces crumbled bleu cheese
  • buttermilk bleu cheese dressing
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • On a large platter, arrange the romaine and red leaf lettuce.
