Cozy No-Sew Blanket Projects: Quick DIY Fleece Throws

No-sew fleece blanket
Today Olivia and I are sharing a simple, no-sew fleece blanket tutorial. These tied fleece blankets have been popular for years, and they’re perfect for beginners, kids, or anyone who prefers a quick, satisfying craft. Olivia discovered the fleece aisle on a recent trip to the fabric store and insisted we walk away with a few yards. We made this blanket together over a relaxed Thanksgiving morning, and it was a fun, easy project that produced a cozy result.
Materials and size notes:
Purchase two matching pieces of fleece. My fabric was 56 inches wide, so the store cut each piece to 56 inches long, giving me two large squares. You can choose any size, but matching the dimensions of both pieces is important so the layers align when tied.
Two layers of fleece stacked
Step-by-step instructions:
1. Clear a large, flat workspace and lay the two fleece pieces directly on top of one another, aligning the edges. Trim any selvage or uneven edges so both layers are exactly the same size.
2. For faster cutting, fold the stacked fleece square in half (or in quarters if your workspace allows) so you can cut through multiple layers at once. Be careful not to cut along any folded edge you want to remain intact.
Cutting corners from fleece
3. Cut a small square out of each corner of the stacked fabric. I used 3-inch by 3-inch corner squares. This prevents bulky corners once the fringe is tied.
4. Around the entire perimeter, make evenly spaced slits through both layers (if folded, you may be cutting through more layers at once). My slits were about 3 inches deep and 1 inch apart; adjust depth and spacing to match the look and warmth you prefer.

5. If you cut while folded, unfold the blanket so both layers lie flat. Tie each top strip to the corresponding bottom strip with a secure double knot. Continue all the way around the blanket. The knotted fringe holds the two layers together and creates a soft decorative edge.

6. Once every fringe pair is tied, your blanket is finished. Inspect the knots and trim any uneven fringe lengths for a polished look.

Tips and variations:
– Use contrasting colors or printed fleece for a fun two-sided effect. – Adjust the slit depth or spacing to make a chunkier or more delicate fringe. – For a more decorative knot, try a square knot or a small bow, but remember that simple double knots hold best for frequent use. – This project is ideal for kids with supervision during cutting.
Have fun making your blanket! It’s a fast, satisfying project that yields a warm, durable throw without any sewing.
I also added a button to the quiet book sew-along announcement for purchasing paper dolls and clothes to include in the quiet book. I’ll share pictures of the finished quiet book and a supply list soon so you can get started preparing.
