Are you team apple pie or team pumpkin pie? Personally, I lean toward sweet potato pie first, then apple. Whatever your favorite, this sign is a fun way to share your love of pies and add cozy, farmhouse-style decor to your home.
This is a simple DIY project you can complete with minimal tools and time using a Cricut or similar cutting machine. Below are the materials and step-by-step instructions to make your own “Fresh Baked Pies” sign.
Materials
- Cricut or another cutting machine
- Cricut blue light or green standard grip mat
- Oracle 651 or other permanent vinyl
- Transfer tape
- High-temp hot glue gun and industrial-strength glue sticks (suitable for wood) or E6000 glue
- White matte paint
- Paintbrush
- Dollar store frame (for glass and backing)
- Cricut weeding tool
- Cricut scraper tool or an old credit card
- Two packs of paint stir sticks
- Fresh Baked Pies SVG (download the SVG file and upload to your cutting software)
How to Make the “Fresh Baked Pies” Sign
Step 1: Cut your paint sticks to size. Measure according to the frame glass you plan to use — two longer pieces for the top and bottom and two shorter pieces for the sides. Repeat the same sizes for the back of the frame.
Step 2: Dry brush the exposed side of the paint sticks with white matte paint to achieve a rustic, farmhouse look. Do not paint the side with ruler markings.
Step 3: Assemble the front frame. Lay out the front pieces and attach the corners with a high-temp hot glue gun and industrial-strength glue sticks for best hold. If you prefer, use E6000 for a stronger, longer-lasting bond. Apply glue to the ends of the shorter sticks and press onto the longer top and bottom pieces.
Step 4: Remove the glass from a cheap frame and discard the rest of that frame. Place the glass onto your newly assembled wood frame and center it. Mark the glass corners lightly with a pen to guide gluing.
Step 5: Apply glue along the innermost edge of the wood frame where the glass will sit. Press the glass into place and hold firmly until the glue sets. Work quickly while the glue is tacky to ensure a secure bond.
Step 6: Create the back of the frame by gluing the remaining paint sticks around the back edge of the glass, enclosing it. Press each piece into place and allow the adhesive to dry fully.
Step 7: While the glue dries, prepare your vinyl decal. Upload the Fresh Baked Pies SVG to your Cricut design software and resize it to match the visible glass area of your sign.
Step 8: Set your machine to cut vinyl. Place Oracle 651 or your chosen permanent vinyl onto the appropriate mat and load it into the Cricut. Send the design to cut.
Step 9: After cutting, weed away the negative vinyl using the weeding tool. Remove the material surrounding the letters and the small enclosed pieces inside letters like a, e, and o.
Step 10: Cut a piece of transfer tape slightly larger than the cut vinyl. Apply the transfer tape over the vinyl and burnish with a scraper tool or credit card to ensure the vinyl adheres to the transfer tape.
Step 11: Flip the design over and slowly peel the vinyl backing away so the vinyl remains on the transfer tape.
Step 12: Find the center of the glass on your frame and position the vinyl decal on the glass. Once satisfied with placement, press and smooth the vinyl down using the scraper tool to adhere it to the glass.
Step 13: Slowly peel the transfer tape away at a low angle, making sure the vinyl stays on the glass. If any part lifts, lay the tape back down and rub again before continuing.
Step 14: Optional — attach twine or wire to the back for hanging.
This easy project is perfect for gifting or displaying in your own kitchen. The finished sign adds a warm, welcoming touch and makes a thoughtful handmade present.
