How to make the best Shrimp Grilled Cheese

Step 1: Pick a sturdy, tasty bread

Use a hearty whole-grain or seeded loaf for best results—Trader Joe’s 7 Grain works great. The bread should toast up crisp and hold the cheese and shrimp without getting soggy. Slice thickness is up to you.

Step 2: Use a heavy skillet

A cast iron skillet gives even heat and a nice golden crust, but any nonstick or stainless pan will work. Heat the pan gently so the bread browns while the cheese melts.

Step 3: Butter is essential

Don’t skip the butter—spread it on the bread or melt it in the skillet to get that rich, golden exterior. For an upgrade, use an herb-garlic butter for extra flavor.

Heat the butter in the skillet until it bubbles, then add the bread, buttered side down.

Step 4: Choose your cheese

High-quality cheese makes the sandwich. Sharp cheddar is classic; feel free to blend cheeses for extra complexity. Use shredded or thin-sliced cheese and layer it over the bread, then cook on low heat until melted and the bread is crispy.

Step 5: Heat the shrimp

We prefer large, juicy shrimp. Use precooked, peeled, and deveined shrimp for convenience—just defrost and warm them in the skillet until they pick up some color and heat through. Nestle the warm shrimp into the melting cheese so they meld with the sandwich.

Step 6: Serve with complementary sides

This sandwich pairs well with a simple green salad, a bowl of tomato soup, or roasted vegetables. Enjoy every bite while the cheese is gooey and the shrimp are tender.

Description

This Shrimp Grilled Cheese is all about bold, simple flavors: crispy buttered bread, melted sharp cheddar, and plump shrimp. It comes together quickly and makes a comforting, protein-packed sandwich.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon unsalted butter
  • 2 slices sprouted grain bread (such as 7-grain)
  • 1.5 ounces extra-sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 4 large precooked, peeled and deveined shrimp, defrosted

Instructions

  1. Heat the butter in a nonstick or cast iron skillet over medium heat.
  2. Place the two slices of bread in the skillet, buttered side down, and top each slice evenly with the shredded cheddar.
  3. While the bread toasts, warm the shrimp in the skillet for a minute or two until heated through and slightly browned.
  4. Arrange the warm shrimp on one slice of bread, pressing them into the melting cheese.
  5. Use a spatula to lift the other slice and close the sandwich, pressing gently to seal.
  6. Cook until both sides are golden and the cheese is fully melted. Remove, slice if desired, and serve immediately.
