Pastry Course Day 8: Chocolate Mask Funky Monster Tutorial

I had a challenging class this week. I expected to be making concave and convex shapes, but I was placed in the group working with masks. I hadn’t brought a mask and hadn’t prepared for this, yet I started in good spirits. From the available options I picked a small bunny mask.

The Mold: Cute Bunny Mask

Our single assignment was to transform the mask into something entirely different — the finished piece shouldn’t resemble the original mask. The mask served only as a mold for the chocolate shape; the finished chocolate needed to become a new object, not a bunny.

I planned to create a Medea-inspired mask with snakes emerging from the head. To make a long story short, that plan didn’t work. Forming snakes from modeling chocolate failed repeatedly, and alternative snakelike elements kept breaking during construction.

In the end I produced what I call a “Funky Monster.” Funky because I improvised a bold tuft of hair, and Monster because the final result is, frankly, rather ugly — in a fun way.

The End Result: “Funky Monster”

Despite the setbacks, I really enjoyed making the Monster. I picked up several new techniques and discovered what I need to change for a better result next time. I also refined my idea for the final assignment of this module, though I’ll need the right materials to make it work as intended.

Overall it was another great day filled with learning and creative experimentation.
