Tofu has become one of my favorite plant-based protein sources—when it’s organic and high quality. I usually find the best tofu at Asian grocery stores; just check the label if you prefer non-GMO products.
Many people shy away from tofu simply because they don’t know how to prepare it properly. If you want a reliable recipe that turns tofu into something crispy, sticky, and full of flavor, this one delivers. It’s easy, uses simple ingredients, and works well for beginners and seasoned cooks alike.
One ingredient that helps make this dish special is sweet soy sauce. If your regular supermarket doesn’t carry it, an Asian grocery store will. Pair this sauce with a light coating of seasonings and sesame, and you’ll get tofu that’s irresistibly tasty.
This preparation yields crisp, sticky tofu that even skeptics tend to enjoy. Serve it over a salad, alongside rice, or enjoy it as a snack—I’ve lost count of the times I’ve polished off an entire block in one sitting. It’s addictive, so be warned: you may eat the whole plate before dinner!
If you’re allergic to soy, no worries—I have multiple protein-rich, soy-free recipes in development. For now, enjoy this tofu version and adapt it as needed.

Sweet & Spicy Sticky Tofu
Salads, Side Dish
Vegan
Ingredients
- 1 brick tofu
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tbsp sweet soy sauce
- 1/2 tsp ginger powder
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds
- 1 hot pepper finely chopped (optional)
Instructions
-
Make the sauce first: combine garlic powder, sweet soy sauce, ginger powder, sesame oil, sesame seeds, and the finely chopped hot pepper if using. Stir well and set aside.
-
Slice the tofu into 8 square pieces by halving the block lengthwise and then quartering. Heat a thin layer of oil in a pan over medium heat. When the oil is hot, add the tofu pieces and cook until the underside is golden and crisp, then flip and brown the other side.
-
Remove the tofu briefly to drain excess oil, then return it to the pan. Reduce the heat to low and pour in the sauce. Cook for about 3 minutes, stirring gently, until the sauce thickens and sticks to the tofu. Cooking time will vary with the thickness of your sweet soy sauce. Serve topped with sliced spring onion if desired. Enjoy!
