We usually make burger patties from scratch rather than buying preformed ones, and turkey burgers are one of our favorites. On one occasion, wanting to change things up, we came across a sweet potato turkey burger idea and adapted it to our taste. Since then we’ve made this version so many times it’s become a go-to weeknight meal.

Why we love these burgers:

  • Turkey is a leaner option than beef but still delivers satisfying flavor.
  • Sweet potato adds a naturally sweet note and helps bind the patties without needing eggs.
  • Spinach is an easy way to sneak in extra vegetables—its mild flavor blends well with the turkey and sweet potato.
  • The recipe is fast: from start to plate in about 25–30 minutes, perfect for busy evenings.

The cooked sweet potato acts as the binder in the mix, keeping patties together without the need for extra eggs or breadcrumbs. You can top the burgers with your favorite condiments; avocado is a personal favorite because it adds creaminess and pairs nicely with the sweet potato.

These patties cook well on a grill pan, a skillet, or an outdoor grill—whichever is most convenient.

Homemade burgers are easy and flavorful. These sweet potato turkey burgers mix ground turkey with cooked sweet potato, spinach, garlic, and seasonings, then finish with melted cheese on an onion bun for a tasty, fast meal.
Makes: 6 burgers

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 sweet potato (cooked)
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 handful of spinach chopped or torn
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground pepper
  • 6 slices muenster cheese
  • 6 onion hamburger buns

Instructions

  • Poke the sweet potato several times with a fork. Microwave on high for 5–8 minutes, until a fork easily pierces the skin. Let cool briefly.
  • Slice open the sweet potato and scoop the cooked flesh into a medium bowl. Add ground turkey, garlic, chopped spinach, salt, and pepper. Mix until combined.
  • Form the mixture into six evenly sized patties about 1 inch thick and roughly the diameter of your buns. Place on a plate while you heat the pan.
  • Heat a grill pan, skillet, or grill to medium heat. Cook the patties 3–4 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F. Add a slice of cheese to each patty during the last minute to melt.
  • Assemble burgers on onion buns and add desired condiments. Serve immediately.
