A Milestone for Traditional Foods on the Publishers Weekly Bestsellers List

Thank you for your support in helping the book reach this milestone. The non-fiction marketplace is crowded with notable titles, including many food books, so your purchases and encouragement mean a great deal.

By purchasing a copy of my book, you’re supporting the preservation of traditional foods and time-honored kitchen techniques. Browse the cookbook shelves and you’ll find many titles focused on quick and easy meals. Recipes such as bone broth or cultured dairy—both in my book—aren’t fast meals, and they’re unlikely to become Super Bowl snacks overnight. That’s part of their value: they honor slow, nourishing processes.

Our parents and grandparents prepared meals using instinct, experience, and family knowledge rather than precise measurements or digital devices. They relied on wholesome ingredients and traditional methods to feed their families nutritiously, whether they cooked in city apartments or country kitchens.

My aim with this book was to capture those time-tested recipes and techniques. The Modern Pioneer Cookbook is more than a collection of recipes; it’s a practical guide to transforming a processed-foods kitchen into a traditional-foods kitchen. The book includes detailed recipes and step-by-step guidance inspired by my mother’s teaching and my own years of kitchen practice.

Book Font and Layout

Thank you for all the thoughtful reviews you’ve been leaving where you bought the book. Reviews help other cooks discover the book and learn how to bring traditional foods into their homes. Greater visibility from reviews and sales encourages booksellers to recommend the book more broadly.

I’ve received many kind comments about the book’s layout and font. Working with Penguin Random House and their DK imprint, I trusted they would produce a beautiful, reader-friendly book. We grew up with DK books in our home while homeschooling our son, so I was excited by their attention to design.

Early on I worried about the recent trend of cookbooks being printed with small type. While eBooks let readers resize fonts, printed books are fixed in size. I’m not fond of tiny fonts, and I wanted a printed book that’s easy to read. I raised this with my editor, and together with the book designer they chose a clear, accessible font and an inviting layout with generous space for photographs. I was delighted when I saw the first draft.

From the feedback I’ve seen and the reviews people have left, many of you appreciate the readable font size, bold type, and overall presentation.
